Run as an in-house design competition within Conrad Gargett, three teams tested multiple ideas in parallel to produce the best outcome for this supreme location. Once a design direction was established, the architecture and interior design teams collaborated from the outset to cultivate a seamless integration from architecture to interiors, and a holistically crafted design language.

The larger context of the location played a major part in the design philosophy of Aalto. Incorporating the contextual cross-section, from the ocean to the hinterland and everything in-between, the team considered what makes Surfers Paradise and the wider Gold Coast so uniquely beautiful.

They were inspired by the natural movement of the sand and water, which is the outcome of Long Shore Drift, where movement beginning in the south picks up the silica and deposits it along the beaches – creating beautiful white sand and crystal blue waters.

The stratification that occurs in the sand as the water leaves it and starts to erode creates an organic ribboned form which is embodied by the sinuous edge of the building.

The Gold Coast landscape is characterised by a contrast of hues, where deep blue waves crash upon golden sands and lush greenery sprawls across basalt rocks. This sense of juxtaposition and textural richness has been the key source of inspiration for Aalto’s materiality. Responding to the coastal climate, the building is composed of hard-wearing and robust materials such as stone, concrete, timber and steel – each selected for its ability to age gracefully. The concrete has been moulded and carved to reflect the natural recesses in the sand, as gently honed by the wind. This is echoed within the residences, where organic elements of the coastline have been translated into a luxurious palette of finishes.

Here, pale timber has been contrasted against striking natural stones and elegant brass details, evoking an alluring sensory experience with strong connections to the landscape.

Conceived as an extension of the Gold Coast environment, Aalto’s landscaping seeks to complement the architecture while providing an elevated sense of wellbeing. Rich in both colour and texture, a palette of diverse coastal species provides protection from the elements while breathing life into the building. An abundance of landscaping on the ground-floor combines with a series of planters which climb up the facade to create a lush green spine.
